Following deliberations with ministers of education across the region, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has decided not to suspend four subjects that are vital to regional education.

At a press conference this afternoon, CXC CEO and Registrar Dr Wayne Wesley affirmed this position.
He stressed that the Council is committed to continuing to offer CAPE Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology, CAPE Green Engineering, CSEC Agricultural Science (Dual Award) and CSEC Industrial Technology (Mechanical Option).

Wesley highlighted the collective dedication shown during the conference, which demonstrated a determination to work together to address the educational challenges facing the region.
Education ministers made their position clear while expressing strong support for CXC and stressing the need to strengthen communication channels with the Board.

Governments have pledged to work with CXC to boost demand for these programs, acknowledging that enrolment is currently insufficient.
Dr. Wesley outlined plans to coordinate regional marketing activities aimed at promoting STEM or STEAM education and climate-smart agriculture, which are considered key to regional economic growth and sustainable development.
Communication Enhancement
Addressing concerns about the communications protocol, Dr Wesley reiterated CXC’s commitment to promoting greater transparency and input from the Minister for Education, ensuring informed decisions are made on high-level policy recommendations.

Challenges and considerations
CXC Deputy Registrar and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eduardo Ali elaborated on the reasons for considering suspending the courses.
He cited multiple challenges, including low or negligible enrolment in some countries, outdated infrastructure and equipment, inadequate laboratory facilities leading to insufficient practical experience, and a shortage of qualified teaching professionals.
Scarcity of resources
Ali also highlighted resource constraints, such as a lack of textbooks and learning materials, which compound the complexity of the education situation.
Admissions Requirements Dilemma
Furthermore, he highlighted the problem of limited opportunities for academic advancement outside of these subjects, noting that many universities and community colleges do not require these subjects as a requirement for admission to their programs.
