The deposit can be noisy. PET bottles are squashed, cans are crushed, and glass is broken at the back of the machine. With different Taro machines you can notice a difference in how they handle the bottles. Why is it that sometimes it sounds like glass bottles breaking, but sometimes you can hear them being sorted into boxes on the other side of the Taro machine?
SIA “Depozita Epakojuma Operators” (DIO), responsible for supervising Deposit System The head of the Latvian business explained that only the “Lidl” chain has machines equipped with glass breaking equipment, so the transferred glass containers will be broken immediately. In other chains, the glass of both single-use and reusable containers remains intact. That is why the sound made when passing a glass bottle also differs.
“Currently, refillable glass bottles account for 18% of all handed over parcels, which are returned to beverage manufacturers for refilling after being counted,” said Gatis Galejs, DIO’s director of logistics and infrastructure. These bottles do not dissolve in any tar.
While in some stores the tar doesn’t damage the glass, you can still hear quite a bit of noise. The clinking of the glass doesn’t mean it breaks immediately, explains Everita Bičkova, head of external communications at “Rimi Latvia”.
