Croí na Gaillimhe is a vibrant community hub that offers a range of programmes designed to combat isolation and promote lifelong learning for older people and the general public.

Central to the center’s efforts are lunch and social clubs, which not only provide meals but also offer important opportunities for seniors to connect with others, breaking the cycle of loneliness.

“For many of our members, this is the most important social event of the week,” said CNG Manager Loretta Needham. “We’ve seen that sharing a simple meal with others can significantly improve a person’s mood and overall well-being.”

Understanding the importance of fostering connections beyond peers, the Centre has developed an innovative intergenerational project called Young at Heart. Older and younger people work with the University of Galway to engage in shared activities such as storytelling, art, music, puppetry and exploring the environment, which fosters mutual understanding and respect between generations.

In addition to social activities, the center offers recreational classes in yoga, art, crafts, sewing, patchwork, mosaics, mobile and tablet, and conversational English to keep the mind and body active. These classes are more than just hobbies – they are powerful tools to help participants stay connected, learn new skills, and maintain a sense of purpose.

Mary, a regular visitor, summed it up perfectly: “Coming here has changed my life. I used to feel so alone but now I have friends, I’m learning new things and I feel like part of something bigger.”

Registration for the course closes on September 10th. Please call between 9:30pm and 12:30pm. For more information, call 091 895203 or email (email protected).
