St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force senior command and the rank and file of the organization met on August 23 to discuss the recent surge in crime and the suspension of all leave, including furlough.
On August 21, the police issued a notice to all department heads, requiring all officers to return immediately to strengthen security in response to the increase in the number of homicides.
According to a police news release, at the Aug. 23 meeting, “discussions focused on the critical need to increase our operational capacity to meet the current challenges we face in maintaining public safety and order. The suspension of furloughs is a necessary measure to ensure we have the full police capacity to effectively respond to the surge in crime.”
It was acknowledged that the officers faced challenges on the ground but the high command assured that efforts were being made to resolve them so that the officers could perform their duties safely and effectively.
On August 23, Prime Minister Dr Terrence Drew highlighted investment and additional support for law enforcement to help fight crime at a crime symposium, including drone technology, comprehensive CCTV coverage, specialist training for officers. A coastal radar system will also be established and more officers are being recruited.
While Caribbean countries are working to curb rising crime rates, support from regional and international partners is also crucial. Caribbean countries continue to work with the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada to combat border security and prevent illegal firearms and ammunition from being deported from their shores, and CARICOM member states continue to cooperate to share resources and intelligence to combat transnational crime.
The Royal Saint Christopher and Nevis Police Force emphasizes its commitment to protecting and serving the citizens of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
