Former President Peter Mutharika’s bodyguard Norman Paulosi Chisale has been acquitted of six charges he answered in court, including insulting Justice Minister Titus Mvalo and former Attorney General Steven Kayuni.
Chisale faced six charges but was acquitted of all of them, including one charge of using abusive language, three charges of intimidation, one charge of obstructing or interfering with the execution of legal proceedings and one charge of disturbing the peace at a police station.
Chief Resident Magistrate Roderick Michongwe said there was no evidence to support charges against the suspects.
The court accused police investigators in charge of the case of poor performance and lack of independence in the investigation.
Misongwe, however, called on Chisale to be careful about how he reacts when angry, saying it could land him in trouble.
The acquittal of Norman Chisale is a testament to the independence of Malawi’s judicial system and many Malawians believe that the case brought by former Attorney General and now High Court Judge Steven Kayuni will ultimately work in the Minister’s favour in the MCP-led government.
Still fresh in people’s minds, the Zomba and Mangochi Chief Magistrates’ Courts acquitted political activist Bong Kalindo of charges of inciting violence by organising nationwide demonstrations against the government of President Lazarus Chakwera.
