A family in Area 49 of Lilongwe has been living in fear since their fence was demolished on Sunday night.

The mother of the family, Chimwemwe Sakunda-Ndhlovu, has since accused the Malawi Congress Party’s Lilongwe City West MP, George Zulu, of hiring thugs to carry out the demolition work.
Apparently, the Zulu and Sakunda-Ndlovu tribes have been fighting over a piece of land, which both claim they purchased from the Lilongwe City Council.
But some residents have accused the councillor of overstepping his authority and taking land from ordinary Malawians, alleging that in addition to Sakunda-Ndlovu’s land, Zulu also claims three other plots of land in the same area.
Although Zulu admitted that he had fought with the woman for the land, he denied funding thugs to commit heinous crimes there.
But in a brief interview on Monday, a seemingly demoralized and downcast Sakunda-Ndlovu insisted that the lawmakers were behind the crime.
“He came with his thugs in the middle of the night to demolish the wall. They demolished the fence by hand because there was no trace of heavy equipment,” she said, adding that the Zulu MP also claimed ownership of four plots of land near his home.
Sakunda-Ndhlovu refused to reveal more information because she feared the MP would use his power and authority to “kill” her.
“I have reported the matter to the police and the Lilongwe City Council. To be honest, I can’t imagine that the councillor would go to the extent of removing the fence from our house. I thought he would be the first one to resolve this issue through proper channels,” she said.
Honorable Zulu confirmed that Ghana shares a common border with Sakunda-Ndlovu and that the two sides disagree over a disputed piece of land.
But the councillor denied sending thugs to remove the fence.
“Be careful, especially now when others want to use the media to smear someone’s reputation. Is that what Ms. Sakunda told you? I know that others are illegally developing on my plot. I have filed a formal complaint with the city council and have been reliably informed that the city council has issued a cease and desist order to these people. The issue of my plot is decided by the city council. Which plot number is involved and who is the owner?” he asked.
