The Teieniwa Vision was launched at a meeting in Tarawa, Kiribati, on February 4-5, 2020, and represents a joint effort by Pacific Island leaders to fight corruption and promote integrity across the region. A key element of the Teieniwa Vision is a call for political will and leadership at all levels of government. Leaders are urged to champion anti-corruption practices in government, public services and communities. The Vision stresses the importance of transparency, the rule of law and good governance, and the need for the state to commit adequate resources to effectively fight corruption.
The vision also emphasizes the need to build a culture of integrity throughout society. This includes strengthening public awareness, education and transparency in both the public and private sectors. The Teieniwa Vision supports the establishment of independent integrity institutions and encourages collaboration with civil society, the media and other stakeholders to fight corruption.
“Teieniwa” means both “sailboat” and “canoe” in Kiribati, symbolizing a journey together through challenges, like a canoe sailing through calm and rough seas. This imagery reflects the long-term collaborative efforts needed to combat corruption and secure a prosperous future for the Blue Pacific.
