Yesterday, the Japanese city of Hiroshima commemorated the estimated 140,000 victims of the first atomic bomb explosion and observed a minute’s silence when the attack took place 79 years ago.
The memorial service was held at 8:15 a.m. in Peace Park, near the center of the explosion, after the bells that ring out each year to commemorate the atomic bomb explosion. At that moment on August 6, 1945, a U.S. Air Force B-29 Enola Gay dropped “Little Boy,” the name given to the first nuclear bomb launched by the United States against an enemy target.
The minute’s silence was part of a ceremony attended by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and invited foreign dignitaries from more than a hundred countries, as well as representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations or the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The bomb dropped on Hiroshima in western Japan had a force equivalent to 13 tons of TNT and exploded at an altitude of about 600 meters, very close to today’s Peace Park, killing about 80,000 people.
The Weight of War
By the end of 1945, the death toll had risen to nearly 140,000, but the exact number of victims from the explosion and subsequent radiation effects is unknown.
