MEIDECC’s NDRMO and the Tonga Meteorological Agency, in partnership with the United Nations and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, have concluded a three-day Early Warning Systems Consultation Workshop. The event, aimed at strengthening Tonga’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS), brought together government agencies, civil society and development partners.
Tonga’s Minister for International Affairs and Climate Change, Fekita Utoikamanu, stressed the importance of collaboration, saying: “Partnerships and collaboration are essential to ensure Tonga can deliver an end-to-end, people-centred early warning system across the islands.”
The workshop focused on the Early Warning for All (EW4All) initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General in 2022 and the regionally led Pacific Weather Readiness Programme (WRP). Tonga is one of the first 30 countries to receive targeted support from the Early Warning for All initiative, which aims to protect everyone by 2027.
The Honourable Minister stressed the importance of preventive action, noting: “Tonga’s systems must be as anticipatory as possible and only respond when necessary.”
