The Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) said the political party code of conduct is expected to promote inclusive, gender-sensitive and violence-free primaries in the country’s upcoming 2025 tripartite elections.
Deputy CMD Ben Chakhame called on all project partners to work with political parties and key stakeholders to enhance gender equality in the primaries.
According to the CMD, the project was based on the identification of challenges and recommendations faced in the 2018-2019 primary elections.
Chakham said the partners are focusing on activities to promote gender equality during party primaries, including developing gender equality standards, addressing violence against women during elections, ensuring access to justice for women affected by violence, and supporting the effective participation of women candidates in primaries.
He further stated that the aim of the code of conduct is to create an enabling environment that supports women’s political participation by preventing discrimination and violence, implementing gender-sensitive actions that uphold women’s right to political participation, and establishing gender-sensitive mechanisms for handling complaints in a confidential and non-victimizing manner.
“The purpose of this exercise is for political parties to adopt and sign the model code of conduct developed with the political parties. Earlier, six political parties, namely the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), People’s Party (PP), United Democratic Front (UDF) and United Change Movement (UTM), held a contact meeting on July 25, 2024 to review the draft model code of conduct,” Chakam said.
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwira has called on political parties to urgently address the issue of violence and political participation against women.
“The MCP will hold policy conferences aimed at promoting women’s participation in politics, prioritizing women and encouraging women’s participation in politics across the country,” Kabwila said.
Similarly, the DPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Chipiliro Mpinganjira, reiterated the party’s commitment to promoting women’s participation in politics by developing a well-thought-out strategy to encourage women to run for party and senior elected positions.
“The DPP will continue to empower women in politics and high-level positions, with DPP women currently occupying leadership positions in parliamentary committees,” Mpingangira said.
