Climate change is causing the length of days on Earth to grow longer, according to a study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists believe that as the Earth’s polar ice caps melt, the redistribution of mass causes sea levels to rise, leading to a rapid lengthening of days.

Specifically, researchers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and ETH Zurich found that due to climate change during the 20th century, daylight lengthened by about 0.3 to 1.0 milliseconds per century.

However, since the year 2000, this rate has risen dramatically to 1.33 milliseconds per century.
