Climate activists protest at Leipzig/Halle Airport – cargo operations suspended
Activists called for stronger climate protection – even in the middle of the night at Saxony’s largest airport. Cargo operations were suspended for three hours and passenger flights were expected to be delayed.

Several activists were demonstrating at Leipzig/Halle Airport to demand stronger climate protection. A federal police spokesman said part of a five-member group was trapped on the ground in the southern area of the airport. A helicopter was searching the area for other activists.
According to an airport spokesman, cargo flight operations were forced to stop for about three hours starting at around 12:30 p.m. In the morning, one of the two runways was said to be open for operations. According to its own information, Leipzig/Halle Airport is the fourth largest air cargo hub in Europe, handling about 1.4 million tons of freight per year.

An airport spokesman said passenger flights may initially be delayed due to the ongoing police operation. The first flight in the morning is scheduled to take off at 5:25 a.m. and the first flight is expected to arrive at 9:10 a.m., according to the airport website.
According to the group Last Generation, which claimed responsibility for the destruction, climate activists entered the airport around midnight. They wanted to signal on the tarmac against increasing air traffic, planned expansion of airport capacity and the federal government’s lack of a plan to quickly phase out fossil fuels.
