August 27, 2024 (Melit) – Deadly clashes between rival factions of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the town of Melit in North Darfur left seven people dead and heightened tension in the region, sources said on Tuesday.

According to witnesses, the fighting began on Monday night when a rapid security force from West Darfur attempted to loot the Melit market, sparking resistance from local rapid security force members.

The incident left seven people dead on each side and two vehicles destroyed. The source added that the market remained closed and residents were trapped in their homes as both sides continued to mobilize fighters and military equipment.

The clashes highlight growing divisions within the Rapid Security Forces, which seized control of Melit in April after fighting armed groups that previously controlled the area.

The escalating violence in Merit, a strategically located city on the border with northern states, has raised concerns about further unrest in the region.

RSF has yet to comment on the matter.
