“The petition is aimed at protecting the Cuban opposition leader, whose physical and mental health is in great danger in prison,” OCDH said in a statement.

Born in Palma Soriano, Santiago, Cuba, José Daniel Ferrer co-founded the Cuban Youth Democratic Movement in the 1990s. He later joined the Christian Liberation Movement led by Oswaldo Paya. He was one of the opponents and activists arrested during the so-called “Black Spring” in 2003 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. After his release, he founded UNPACU.
From 2003 to 2011, he was held in various prisons of the Cuban regime. In 2019, he was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison after a secret trial on corruption charges. He was held in Versailles Prison in Santiago de Cuba. In April 2020, under strong pressure from the international community, his sentence was commuted to four and a half years of house arrest.
On July 11, 2021, Ferrer and his son Daniel Ferrer Cantillo were arrested for participating in a social outbreak against the island’s regime, Ferrer’s house arrest was revoked and he was eventually transferred to Mar Verde prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and several of the organization’s special rapporteurs have called for his release. And emphasized his case.
