Fertilizer cooperation: a key factor in transformation
Food production accounts for a quarter of the world’s CO2 emissions. By using fertilizers produced without fossil energy, you can take a big step on the road to climate-neutral food production. The cooperation between Yara and Lantmännen now makes it possible to grow food more sustainably.
Mineral fertilizers, also known as artificial fertilizers or commercial fertilizers, are one of the world’s most important innovations and are estimated to account for about half of the world’s food production. There are many different types of mineral fertilizers with different contents depending on growing conditions and crop use.
Production with a lower climate footprint
Yara has a large research department that tests and develops fertilizer products. Achieving climate neutrality is a challenge when the product itself is made from fossil gas, but Yara has made great progress. – Our products now have a 50-60% lower climate footprint compared to producers outside Europe*, says Tina Vinnerborg, Vice President of Commercial Sweden.
But that’s certainly not enough. To achieve this, they work on improving today’s technologies and developing tomorrow’s technologies. One of these is minimizing greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing. Yara has now developed a production process that uses water instead of natural gas as a raw material and produces it with the help of renewable electricity. The fertilizer produced in this way reduces CO2 emissions by 80% to 90%*. The product is launched on the market with Lantmännen and will be fully produced at the factory within the year.
Business partnerships enable transformation
Yara fertilizers have a significantly lower climate footprint and are included as a criterion in Climate & Nature – Lantmännen’s Future Farming Plan for the 2024 harvest. The plan enables farmers to use more sustainable farming methods on their farms. – With fertilizers and fossil-free fuels and transport, Lantmännen will be able to create a fossil-free food chain from farm to table. This collaboration is essential to restructure large-scale food production, says Claes Johansson, Lantmännen Sustainability Manager.
Mineral fertilizers reduce climate footprint
• Yara is a leading supplier of nitrogen-based mineral fertilizers and industrial products. The company is a world leader in ammonia, nitrates and specialty fertilizers.
• By 2024, Yara will be able to supply the Swedish market with fossil-free nitrate-based fertilizers, with a further 80-90% reduction in carbon footprint due to the use of renewable energy.
• Independent certification body DNV verifies the climate impact of Yara products according to the PCF (Product Carbon Footprint) methodology, one of the most established methods for determining a product’s climate footprint.
Lantmännen’s Climate and Nature Programme
• Lantmännen is an agricultural cooperative and a leading Nordic company in agriculture, machinery, bioenergy and food. Owned by 18,000 Swedish farmers, Lantmännen covers the entire value chain from farm to fork.
• Climate and Nature is Lantmännen’s farming plan for the future of agriculture, which includes concrete measures to reduce the impact of farming on the climate and benefit biodiversity.
• Through Klimat & Natur, Lantmännen has reduced the climate impact of wheat cultivation by 45% compared to conventional cultivation in Sweden when the project started in 2015. The program is dynamic and constantly adds criteria for more sustainable agricultural methods.
