SACATEPEQUEZ – The Reds let victory slip away and their promotion aspirations were complicated.
On the second day of Group D of the 2024 Central American Cup, Municipal drew 1-1 with Real Esteli of Nicaragua at the Pensativo Stadium, a result that complicated their chances of advancing to the next round.
The match was played behind closed doors in the colonial city, with the Reds sanctioned by CONCACAF for the incident that took place during their 2022 CONCACAF League clash with Olimpia at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuchí Flores.

As promised, the Northern Train tried to surprise in the opening minutes, such as a try by Byron Bonilla that went high and another by Juan Vieyra that was caught by Alejandro Medina.
Following these moves, the Scarlets tried to get the ball but they struggled to be precise and it reached the goal dangerously well defended by Jason Vega.
The local’s first shot on the opposing goal became a goal and in a set-piece game the ball was left to Pedro Altan who created space to enter the penalty area and left no options with his left foot to put the ball in. -0 instantaneously.
Despite the score, the tempo of the game did not speed up and even slowed down due to constant fouls by both sides, which led to players starting to receive warnings.
The locals showed a more attacking attitude in the second half, but that lasted for a few minutes, with Jonathan Franco’s shot blocked by a defender before Vega flew in to deflect Rudy Barrientos’ shot.
As the clock ticked on, the Reds began to lose intensity and Sebastien Beeney withdrew his attacking players, making it clear that his priority was to preserve the 1-0 victory.
This also led to Northern Train taking the ball, pushing the defensive line and continuing to attack in search of at least an equaliser, which they achieved in the final part.
In the 94th minute of the match, the ball was played to Harold Medina who fired a left-foot shot straight at goalkeeper Alejandro Medina, but the ball flew through his hands and into the goal frame.
Municipal, still without a win in the 2024 Central American Cup, must now beat Guanaca Casteca next week so there is a chance of advancement when they travel to Saprissa on August 28.
