Tegucigalpa– Tenants of different markets in Choluteca have again declared an indefinite strike to protest against the operation of the new private terminal, which they claim has severely affected their income.

Transport users, transporters, street vendors, taxi drivers, teachers, students, parents and other members of the Honduran people participated in the mobilization, spokesperson Yamilyes Flores reported.

Flores said the decision was not taken lightly but was a last resort considering the negative impact the private terminal had on their business. According to them, the new terminal was authorized under what they called arbitrary and opaque circumstances, depriving Choluteca merchants of the most precious thing: their customers. The use of force and coercion to redirect traffic users has caused great economic losses to those who rely on the constant flow of people to the city’s markets.

«We are defending our municipal terminal, which is protected by Decree 91-2017, which suspends the operation of this private terminal. This decree protects all businessmen and citizens of Choluteca and we will not allow a small group of investors and transporters to benefit at the expense of the well-being of the majority,” Flores declared.

The spokesman also stressed the importance of tenants in the local and national economy, stressing that they are job creators and active contributors to the Honduran treasury. “We are not a burden on the government, but a fundamental bulwark of the Choluteca and Honduran economies,” he said.

Finally, the protesters demanded that the Choluteca municipal authorities immediately review the concession granted for the construction of the private terminal and suspend its operations in order to preserve the collective well-being of the population.

The mobilization work will continue until the local government receives a satisfactory response.pound
