In 2020, China sent a lunar rover with astronauts on board to the moon for the first time. This lunar exploration mission was named “Cheng-1-5”.
The astronauts who participated in this expedition brought enough lunar soil. Studies have shown that the soil contains a large amount of hydrogen and various minerals. When the soil is subjected to high temperatures, hydrogen reacts with the minerals to form water vapor.
According to CCTV, “After three years of intensive scientific research, our scientists have learned that it is possible to extract water from the lunar soil. This information will be very useful if people want to build a space station or research center on the lunar surface in the near future. This is a very important discovery.”
According to Chinese scientists, the method they used in their research can produce a minimum of 51 liters and a maximum of 76 liters of water per ton of soil on the moon.
In fact, China has been seeking to mine lunar soil for years, and the country is competing with the United States on this issue.
Bill Nelson, director of the U.S. space research agency NASA, recently warned Washington that most of the mineral-rich areas on the moon are at risk of being occupied by China in the future if Beijing does not stop.
