Asia’s National Meteorological Center reported on Friday that China’s average temperature in July was the highest recorded for the month since 1961.
The official China Daily quoted the agency’s deputy director Jia Xialong as saying that the average temperature across the country reached 23.2 degrees Celsius in July this year, 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than the annual temperature.
“In July, China experienced extreme rainfall and extreme heat across the country,” Jia Yueting said at an event in Beijing. South China experienced a large-scale, prolonged heat wave, with some areas experiencing sustained high temperatures for more than 20 days.
A total of 59 national weather stations recorded daily maximum temperatures that broke or equaled all-time records. Last month, heat records were broken around the world, with July 22 being the hottest day on record for the planet, with a global daily average temperature of 17.15°C.
Experts explained that the sudden increase in daily average temperature between July 21 and 22 was mainly due to the fact that the temperature in the northern hemisphere, especially North America and Europe, as well as most parts of Antarctica was significantly higher than normal.
According to the center’s forecast, temperatures in most parts of my country will continue to be high in August. Two significant heat waves are expected in the first half of August, and the high temperature is expected to weaken by the end of the month.
In July, heavy rains killed more than 30 people in central China and left hundreds of thousands homeless.
