The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Board of Directors has approved $13.4 million in financing to the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to enhance the resilience of Sandy Bay and other northerly communities to coastal hazards and the potential impacts of climate change.
The Sandy Bay Sea Defence Restoration Project aims to reduce the rate of coastal erosion by constructing sea defences along sections of the Sandy Bay coastline.
“The project will reduce the vulnerability of Sandy Bay and other northerly communities to severe coastal erosion caused by wave action and storm surges during tropical storms and hurricanes,” said Daniel Best, project director at the National Development Bank.
“Erosion of the Sandy Bay shoreline threatens the social and economic activities of the Windward Highway and surrounding communities. The Windward Highway is the only access for critical economic activities in the community, including geothermal sites currently under development and popular attractions on the northeast coast.”
The main contents of the project include:
- Preparation of feasibility studies including environmental and social monitoring plans;
- Construction of coastal defense works along approximately 730 meters of coastline, including stone revetments, retaining walls and river channel regulation, as well as auxiliary works such as green space and road construction;
- Engineering and construction related services; and
- Project management, monitoring and evaluation.
This investment is in line with the Bank’s Disaster Management Strategy and Operational Guidelines and Climate Adaptation Strategy. The initiative also supports the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ vision to improve the quality of life for all citizens, as outlined in the National Economic and Social Development Plan (2013-2025). Goal 4 of the plan emphasizes improving physical infrastructure, protecting the environment and building resilience to climate change.
