GuySuCo’s first crop this year was a record low, but new CEO Paul Cheong said the company plans to maximize mechanization and use technology to reach its production target of 100,000 tons this year. Cheong firmly believes that sugar is profitable and will make a positive contribution to Guyana’s development.
Mr Zhang was reluctant to reveal dismal figures for the first crop production, saying he wanted to focus on the positives as plans were moving forward to make up and meet the set 2024 annual target.
“The first season was not good due to El Nino… It was one of the worst harvests in history,” Cheong told Stabroek News late last month. He said the low yield was not due to poor management but mainly bad weather and the inability to harvest at the Albion estate. “Albion had a bad harvest last season and that affected efficiency because we had to move the crop to Rose Hall… Sugarcane deteriorates over time and recovery is poor,” he said.
