The newly elected National Director of Research for the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Ronald Chanthunya, has paid tribute to delegates for electing him to the position despite the fact that he was out of the country during the congress.
Chanthunya was in Canada for a high-level meeting when the MCP went to an election conference two weeks ago. But he still managed to get 574 votes, beating three other candidates who got 200 votes each.
Prior to being elected as the National Director of Research, the former Baraka MP served as the Eastern Region Director of Economic Affairs for the MCP.
Speaking to the Nyasa Times on Friday, Chantunya said he did not take for granted the trust shown in him by the deputies.
“I am honoured to have their confidence and I assure them that I will do my best to live up to their expectations. I also congratulate our President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for levelling the playing field for everyone at the assembly. I assure him of my dedicated service to him as the leader of our beloved party and head of state so that he can continue to develop the country as he has been doing,” he said.
In Canada, Chanthunya attended the 2024 IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition in his capacity as Director General of the Blantyre Water Board (BWB).
While there, he had the opportunity to attend the 2024 IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition in Toronto, Canada.

According to the show we saw, Chanthunya participated in “Water Security and Resilience: Strategies for ensuring reliable access to clean water in the context of climate change and population growth, including innovative approaches to protecting water sources and infrastructure.”
Another topic concerns urban water management: smart city solutions for efficient use of water resources and integrated planning to address the challenges of urbanization.
Chanthunya revealed that when engaging with professionals from different economies, he noticed that they had a bias towards the challenges faced by developed countries.
He said that as a representative of a developing country, he believed that Malawi’s unique difficulties were not being adequately addressed.
“I appreciate the proposal to prioritize topics related to developing countries in future conferences to promote more inclusive dialogue and equitable water management globally,” he said.
Chanthunya said the IWA World Water Congress is a platform for knowledge exchange, but it is important to ensure that the voices of developing countries are heard. Let us advocate for a balanced water challenge and reduce the gap between developed and developing economies.
