President Lazarus Chakwera arrived in Frankfurt, Germany today, continuing his official European tour with his first stop being Italy.

The President, accompanied by the First Lady, is visiting Germany to strengthen diplomatic, trade and investment ties with a wide range of partners in key sectors of the economy.

Upon their arrival at Frankfurt International Airport, the First Couple were greeted by German government dignitaries, including the Minister of Federal, European and International Affairs, His Excellency Manfred Penz, as well as staff of the Malawi Mission in Berlin and some of their entourage.

They were then taken to the municipal offices, where they were warmly welcomed by Offenbach’s mayor, Dr. Felix Schwenk, and given the honor of signing the city’s Golden Book.

His first priority will be to meet with investors who have shown keen interest in helping Malawi maximise Lake Malawi’s inland shipping capacity, port infrastructure and water projects.

The first couple then visited the Harbour Square and boarded the Primus Linie ship to hold talks with representatives of the German shipping company.

The water conference discussed topics such as inland waterway transport, port infrastructure and water projects on Lake Malawi. The President witnessed the signing of agreements at the Ministry of Logistics and Transport. The signing included: – Agreements for further cooperation and support; and agreements for internships with inland waterway transport, ports, bulk cargo, freight and water projects companies.

Such investment interventions are in line with President Chakwera’s dream of transforming the country into an industrialised economy with a robust blue economy that is largely dependent on a reliable water transport system.

The President has identified tourism as one of the priority accelerators of economic growth, and the contacts with German investors point to a strategic direction of building good infrastructure around and on the lake to meet the needs of local and international holidaymakers.

This afternoon the First Couple will travel to the capital, Berlin, where the Malawian leader is expected to attend a series of official events over the next two days.
