Malawi has secured a landmark project in the energy sector with a €70 million investment by Sun Power Africa Development Limited to build a 50 MW solar farm in Choma, Mzuzu.

The project, which covers 80 hectares in Choma, Mzuzu, is expected to employ more than 100 people during construction, with 80 people to be employed at each construction site over the next 25 years.
This major investment is the brainchild of Mzuzu University under the guidance of the Vice-Chancellor, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and the entire management.
Over the past decades, the University of Mzuuni has developed into a centre of excellence in renewable energy research. Now it is time for the university to put into practice what it teaches by implementing a project of this magnitude that will increase its income in addition to strengthening practical research.

According to Professor Wales Singini, Vice-Chancellor of Mzuni, they have signed a power purchase agreement with the Electricity Supply Company of Malawi (Escom) for a starting capacity of 20 megawatts, which could be increased with the commitment of 70 million euros by investors.

Zeno Fleck, one of the shareholders of Sun Power Africa Development Limited, said his company has completed all the feasibility studies for the project and they are ready to start after signing the memorandum of understanding. He revealed that he will travel to Malawi in the coming weeks to get the project started.
When he took office in 2020, President Chakwera promised the people of Malawians that chronic power outages would become a thing of the past, a promise he has already delivered on. This trend is reflected in the rehabilitation of infrastructure and the construction of new power plants, such as the one set aside for the Choma solar power plant.
