President Lazarus Chakwera on Monday received recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which pledged support to promote women and youth, technology and innovation, and prioritize agricultural modernization as a catalyst for food security, poverty reduction and economic growth in the country.

Writing on his Facebook page after an exchange with FAO Director-General Dr Qu Dongyu in Rome yesterday, Chakwera said the driving force of the meeting remains its MW2063 blueprint and Agriculture, Mining and Tourism (ATM) strategy.
“Bangladesh Agenda 2063 outlines the common aspirations and goals of our people for the year 2063. It is based on three pillars of agricultural productivity and commercialization, industrialization and urbanization,” he said.
He added that the FAO Director-General was attentive to the aspirations of the Malawi nation and reiterated FAO’s support and technical assistance to Malawi.
“We will work towards commercialization, mechanisation and industrialisation of agriculture to achieve food security in Malawi and the region,” he said.
During the meeting, Chakwera added, he also called on FAO to provide technical assistance to help Malawian farmers transition from smallholder subsistence farming to climate-smart agriculture that can withstand the threats of annual floods and droughts.
