Mzuzu, July 31, Mana: President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has described the late Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima as a visionary who was committed to the prosperity of Malawi.

The President met with chiefs from Karonga, Chitipa, Lunfi and Nkhatawan at the Mzuzu State Lodge on Wednesday, who came to pay a special tribute to the Vice President’s death.

Chakwera noted that the tragic plane crash killed the Vice President and eight others, plunging the entire country into grief and sorrow.

“We look to God, to the Creator, who knows everything, and may He continue to heal our hearts,” Chakwera said.

Paramount Chief Kungu acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic, Cyclone Freddy and the recent plane crash have presented many challenges to President Chakwera’s administration.
He said the president had been subjected to unnecessary insults since the vice president’s death.

Paramount Kungu said: “These insults on different platforms show the moral decline of our people.”

He then praised the president for keeping his cool and not retaliating for the insult.

Kuyungu added that the chiefs were happy with the President’s openness to dialogue and stressed the importance of unity among Malawians during these challenging times for the country.

Defence Minister Harry Mkandawire emphasised the significance of the chiefs’ gesture to console the President, stressing that the gesture reflected the cultural and moral values of Malawians.

He thanked Chakwera for taking the time to meet with traditional leaders, saying it showed his respect and value for cultural traditions.
