The President of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has hailed the launch of the Research Excellence and Training Open Resources (CREATOR) building at the Sports Centre of the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in Blantyre.
Speaking at the launch of the facility, Chakwera said the facility would epitomise the vision for postgraduate professional training of doctors and research scientists.
“CREATOR has the potential to revolutionize health research in Malawi and the SADC region, scaling up the scale and quality of research while enriching postgraduate professional education in the country,” he said.
He said CREATOR will feature an innovation centre where ideas will be born, tested and developed through collaboration.
The President said the building, once completed, would help address the shortage of office space.
The President said that as a nation, we must never imagine that operating in a state of ignorance and speculation is without cost.
“Many of you may have read in the international media this week that one of the biggest challenges facing Malawi’s health sector is the long-standing prevalence of counterfeit medicines,” he said.
The state-of-the-art project is funded by the Government of Malawi, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), the Wellcome Trust, the University of Liverpool (UoL) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).
President Chakwera arrived accompanied by First Lady Monica Chakwera and was welcomed by Education Minister Madalitso Wirima, High Chief Kapeni and Blantyre Mayor Joseph Makwinja, among others.
The President first listened to a briefing about the facility, then cut the ribbon and unveiled a symbolic plaque before touring the building. He then signed the visitor’s register in the cafeteria.
President Chakwera also commended the ongoing construction work at the KUHes Administrative Building.
