Some candidates contesting for various posts at the ongoing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) congress received a rude awakening on Thursday noon after President Lazurus McCarthy Chakwera bluntly accused them of “buying” delegates.
Chakwera, who is also the president of the Maharashtra Communist Party (MCP), in his opening speech at the convention at the Bombay International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, condemned the practice of “buying off” delegates and said it was saddening in the context of growing corruption in the country.
Some candidates openly offered millions of dollars to delegates ahead of the convention, raising serious concerns, suspicions and questions about the source of those funds.
“It is not good to tempt delegates with money when corruption is rampant. Do not buy office. It is not good for the party,” Chakwera said.
“I urge representatives to vote wisely and not to think about whether the candidate gave you money.
“Vote for hard-working, service-oriented leaders who will serve the party diligently and help bring the party back to power in the 2025 general elections”.
Chakwera then expressed optimism that the Maharashtra Communist Party (MCP) will win the upcoming general elections, pointing out that the party has won most of the by-elections in the past four years.
