Malawi President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has commended the Conference of Central African Elders (CCAP) for its contribution to various sectors of the economy.
The President stated this while officiating at the centenary celebrations of the General Assembly of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterians (CCAP) at the CIVO Stadium in Lilongwe today.
On education, the President said CCAP has built many secondary schools where our children study every day. He said these schools are vital to national development.
The President said in the health sector, CCAP had built many hospitals currently used by the Malawian people. He said these hospitals have made a great contribution to universal health coverage which requires citizens to have access to health care close to them.
On the agricultural sector, the President commended CCAP for opening more agricultural farms and contributing positively to food security.
The President has since appreciated CCAP’s contribution to good governance. He said that during his presidency, he had met CCAP several times to seek advice on good governance.
The background is that CCAP was founded in 1924 as a result of the work of Scottish and Dutch missionaries in the last quarter of the 19th century.
The ceremony brought together all CCAP members from the three churches in Malawi – Livingstonenia, Blantyre and Nkoma.
Upon arrival, President Chakwera, accompanied by First Lady Monica Chakwera, signed the Visitors’ Register before touring the various pavilions to admire the various projects in the fields of evangelization, health, agriculture and education that the Synod has known over the past 100 years of its presence in the country.
The event was attended by Vice President Dr. Michael Bizwik Usi, former President Mrs. Joyce Banda and former First Gentleman Richard Banda, former Vice President Kumbo Kachali, several senior government officials and leaders of various denominations.
