President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said his administration is committed to ensuring good yields in agricultural production by farmers in the country.
Dr Chakwera made the remarks at the opening of the two-day Southern African Agricultural Union (SACAU) annual conference in Lilongwe today.
The country’s president noted that various agricultural interventions face many challenges due to climate change, but suggested that it is time to align national policies with international standards.
He said that the Malabo Declaration is a comprehensive plan to accelerate agricultural growth and transformation, aimed at strengthening commitments to improving agricultural productivity and efficiency, increasing investment in agriculture and rural development, and enhancing access to markets and value chains, and therefore should be adopted.
“As a member state, Malawi is committed to working closely with the Southern African Business Federation to ensure that our activities achieve positive outcomes,” he said.
“We’re going to succeed. We’re going to prosper. We’re going to overcome. So, cheer up. It’s going to be alright.”
Before the conference opened, the President visited some of the pavilions showcasing various agricultural interventions being taken by farmers.
In his speech, Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) president Manesi Nkhata said the gathering will help farmers in the region discuss the challenges and successes they face in the campaign.
“We will discuss the preparedness of agriculture in the event of climate shocks and disasters. So, this is in our favour,” Nkhata said.
Dr Sinare Sinare, president of the South African Business Federation, noted that individual countries cannot voice their concerns individually on a global scale, so they need such conferences to focus on discussing and raising these concerns.
The opening ceremony was attended by officials from the National Association of Smallholder Farmers of Malawi (NASFAM) and other officials.
The Southern African Farmers Union is a membership-based regional farmers’ organization representing the common interests of farmers in Southern Africa, with members including 19 Southern African Development Community countries.
