Centenary Bank, the largest commercial microfinance bank, recently opened a new branch in Buliisa District in western Uganda, expanding its network to 81. The new branch aims to serve the wider community in the Bunyoro region, which is experiencing rapid growth in economic activity fueled by the oil and gas industry.
The Brisa district will also be the bank’s newest branch in Uganda, with plans to open more branches in other parts of the country in the future.
Commenting on the opening of the new branch, General Manager, Corporate Communications and Marketing, Centenary Bank, Beatrice Lugalambi, said the establishment of the new branch is in line with the bank’s agenda to promote financial inclusion by extending services to every corner of Uganda.
“Today marks an important milestone in our fight for financial inclusion for Ugandans. As a bank, our dream is for every Ugandan to have ready access to financial services and this is what we are always working towards. Our branch network continues to expand as we work towards promoting all kinds of economic activities in every corner of Uganda,” she said.
According to the Uganda Bankers Association, the country has a total population of over 45 million, with less than 13 million people being banked. However, channels such as agent banking help fill the gap caused by the lack of branches in remote areas. The establishment of a branch in Burisa will further bring these basic services to local people and businesses, thereby promoting financial inclusion in the region.
Samuel Bwete, Branch Manager of Centenary Bank in Blisa, stressed the importance of a community-based approach to sustaining bank operations.
“Today is a momentous day for the people of Burisa. We are not only opening our doors to them, but we are also bringing them numerous opportunities through deep and friendly financial and social relationships to support their growth and transformation. Centenary Bank is known for its extensive presence across the country, and true to its values, the bank has always been keen to actively engage in the communities in which it operates. My team and I will ensure that this happens and that we make a lasting impact on this community.”
Centenary Bank continues to step up its efforts to make financial services more accessible to Ugandans through the expansion of its branch network and the introduction of innovations such as agent banking. These initiatives are designed to provide unparalleled services to customers while ensuring that the bank remains competitive in the global banking industry.
