One blood donation can save three lives. Such a selfless act of blood donation can save the lives of many patients who are in urgent need of blood transfusion.
Yesterday was World Blood Donor Day, celebrating society’s unsung heroes and their invaluable contribution to saving lives.
Among the many blood donors, 39-year-old Dawa Dorje has voluntarily donated blood more than 44 times since 2001.
“I live in the Chanzamtog area of Thimphu. When I was in school and passed by the hospital on my way home, I often heard people talking about patients who could not survive because of insufficient blood supply,” Dawa said.
He recalled a medical professional who was one of the first people to tell him about the importance of donating blood and how such a small act could help save lives.
“I have never looked back since then. I have been donating blood ever since then,” Dawa said, adding that he does not ask for anything in return for donating blood.
Likewise, 42-year-old Tshering Zangmo donated blood for the first time in 2008. Since then, Tshering has donated blood more than 32 times.
“I first started donating blood in 2008 when one of my colleagues became ill and needed a blood transfusion,” Tshering shared.
Patients with blood diseases need blood transfusions, Tshering said. “Without donors, they suffer greatly. So it is our responsibility to help them.”
Dawa Dorje said that medical care in Bhutan is free and blood donation is very important. “Even a small contribution is important to save lives.”
Speaking about the importance of donating blood to save lives, the son of a blood recipient shared how his mother was saved because of the selflessness of the blood donors.
“Many people may not understand the benefits of blood donation and the impact it has on the lives of recipients. As a beneficiary of blood donation, my mother sees sunshine every day because of their selfless acts,” he said.
He added that his mother would not have survived without the blood donation.
Minister of Health Thantin Wangchuck and Minister of Health Pemba Wangchuck both stressed the importance of blood donation, expressed gratitude to the blood donors and encouraged more people to voluntarily donate blood in the future.
Currently, there are 27 blood banks in the country.
