The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe has asked community governance structures and political parties in Malawi to adopt policies to promote There is a balanced gender composition in leadership positions.


CCJP Governance Officer Felix Nakoma said this is the single most reliable way to increase women’s participation and representation Hold political and leadership positions in various fields.
Nakoma stated this during an exchange meeting with traditional and community leaders under the Traditional Authority (T/A) Kayembe in Dowa.
Dowa is one of the districts where CCJP is implementing the project “Increasing Women’s Participation in the 2025 Malawi General Elections” with financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Nakoma said the Dowasi constituency was chosen because it has historically preferred male candidates.
“This region has never produced a female MP or councillor since we adopted multi-party democracy. This is a step backwards,” he said, further questioning that unless women are fully empowered and involved in the implementation of various development projects, Malawi will not be able to achieve its urgent development aspirations as advocated in the Malawi Plan 2063 (MW2063).
Representative of T/A Kayembe, Senior Village Headman (SGVH) Siwinda admitted that some of their cultural practices exacerbated discrimination and marginalization of women in society.
Siwinda pledged to revisit these practices in the spirit of consolidating gender equality in the region.
