The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Justice Minister Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda to consider halting the process of finding a new passport supplier and revert to Techno Brain.

CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa told a press conference in Lilongwe this morning that they have confirmed that the government is looking for a new supplier as the K897 million, six-month contract with E-Techno Systems expires at the end of August this year.

Namiwa said they were concerned that the government would spend no less than 69 billion kyats to set up a parallel system and therefore asked to revert to Techno Brain to save taxpayers’ money.

In a written response, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda referred us to the Department of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Immigration, saying he was not responsible for public procurement.

Meanwhile, DHS Principal Secretary Dr. Steven Kayuni said: “Techno Brain will not go backwards. The procurement process for new suppliers has already begun and we are confident that the PPDA legal guidance will be concluded soon.”
