The Category 5 hurricane made landfall on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island with winds up to 185 mph, causing catastrophic damage and loss of life, leaving at least 70,000 people homeless, making it one of the most destructive hurricanes in Bahamian history.
itelbpo has a contact center in Freeport, Bahamas, with over 150 employees and a hands-on understanding of the devastation in the region. The Jamaican business process outsourcing company quickly mobilized its own task force and called on the Jamaican public and private sectors to help Bahamian communities rebuild after the hurricane. itelbpo’s 4Ys Foundation GoFundMe campaign aims to raise $100,000 in donations. To date, itelbpo has raised over $60,000, including $25,000 of its own funds.
One week after Hurricane Dorian, itelbpo’s 4Ys Foundation has deployed $30,000 in disaster relief items, including medical devices, equipment, child care and household items.
Support from the CB Facey Foundation
The CB Facey Foundation, which supports local initiatives based in education, the arts and the environment, saw an urgent need to support the relief efforts of itelbpo’s 4Ys Foundation.
“We have watched in agony as the people of the Bahamas have had to work to recover, rebuild and ultimately reconstruct their lives. We were compelled to answer the call of itelbpo’s 4Ys Foundation,” said Anna Ward, Executive Director of the CB Facey Foundation.
“It’s been really inspiring to be part of the rebuilding effort and support the families affected,” Ward said. “We’ve all seen the impact and devastation that natural disasters like hurricanes can cause.”
Hurricane damage and climate change
In keeping with its mission of environmental conservation, the CB Facey Foundation and its project Jamaica Conservation Partners believe it is necessary to draw attention to the devastating effects of climate change on the environment and the people of the Caribbean.
Hurricanes and tropical storms are naturally generated by ocean heat. As climate change causes increased greenhouse gas emissions and ocean temperatures rise, hurricanes are becoming more destructive.
The study published in Nature also shows that climate change is weakening the atmospheric currents that help hurricanes move. Storms now move more slowly and linger longer over affected areas, increasing the likelihood of severe flooding, loss of life and economic damage.
