(CIFA): The Cayman Islands’ World Cup journey will kick off this week in Grand Cayman. The Cayman Islands men’s national team will participate in the 26th World Cup CONCACAF Champions League qualifiers will face Antigua and Barbuda at the Truman Bodden Sports Centre in Georgetown at 3:30pm on Saturday, June 8. “We are very excited that the World Cup qualifiers are about to begin,” said Joey Jap Tjong, who was appointed head coach in February and led the team to two matches in Turkey earlier this year.
“We have a group of young, talented and motivated players who are proud to represent the national team. I had high hopes for the players and they did exactly that,” he added.
The Cayman Islands were drawn in Group A of the second round of CONCACAF qualifying, with Antigua and Barbuda having won one and drawn one. The two teams last played out a 1-1 draw in 2008 as part of the CONCACAF Caribbean Cup. Antigua and Barbuda will face Bermuda in the second round of qualifying on June 5.
“Antigua and Barbuda is a strong team with several experienced players,” said Jap Tjong.
It is expected to be a tough match and I look forward to seeing how our players react.”
The match was scheduled for the afternoon to meet the technical requirements for live broadcasting. CONCACAF is broadcasting the game. “We look forward to seeing Cayman Islands supporters fill the stands at the National Stadium,” said Jap Tjong. “Cheer loudly, be proud, be positive and let the players know you appreciate their efforts.”
