On The Tonight Show with Andy Cohen, when the host asked Blanchett which movie she was paid the most for, she guessed it had to be The Lord of the Rings, to which Blanchett responded: Are you kidding me? No, nobody got paid for that movie. When Cohen asked if his salary included a percentage of sales, Blanchett said: No! Not from that sentence. No, nothing.
He further mentioned Peter Jackson and his history with the 1992 zombie comedy film Mind Off, which was released in North America, and said: “I want to work with the people who made Mind Off.
The Australian actor played Galadriel, an elf king from Middle-earth with powerful magical abilities in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and reprised his role in the “Hobbit” series, a prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” directed by New Zealander.
He’s not the only Lord of the Rings actor to speak out about being underpaid for his roles in the fantasy saga, with Orlando Bloom, who plays the elf Legolas, telling an interviewer in 2019 that he was paid just $175,000 for three films.
“Basically, I got free sandwiches,” Blanchett said of her Lord of the Rings salary. Actresses don’t get paid as much as you might think.
The actor was at the show to promote the sci-fi film No Man’s Land, which is set to be released today (Friday). The film, based on the popular video game of the same name, stars Blanchett as Lilith, an outlaw hired by weapons manufacturer Atlas (Edgar Ramirez) to return to her home planet Pandora in search of her missing daughter.
