According to the Russian Satellite News Agency, cases of West Nile fever infection have been reported in 22 regions of Russia, with the incidence rate 13% higher than the statistical average.
“Groups at high risk of the disease include those with chronic diseases and the elderly,” the department clarified.
As Rospotrebnadzor explains, warm weather is a factor that prolongs the lifespan of blood-sucking mosquitoes that spread the disease. In countries with hot climates and in southern Russia, most people are sick with West Nile fever.
According to RBC, the Tatarstan Ministry of Health reported on August 27 that the number of registered cases of fever has increased to 59. The Ministry of Health clarified that only one infected person did not require hospitalization.
West Nile fever (WNF) is a viral infection that causes symptoms of systemic intoxication, headache, and muscle pain. Sometimes patients develop serous meningitis and meningoencephalitis. Most commonly, a person becomes infected with West Nile virus through mosquito and tick bites.
Rospotrebnadzor previously reported isolated cases of infection with the virus registered in Russia in 2024. The department clarified that most of the cases were imported.
