It is a literal translation of the slang “once in a blue moon”, which also has a Czech equivalent, “once in a city”. American farmers thus celebrated the third full moon of a season, and a total of four full moons, which is rare. Each season usually has three full moons.

A full moon occurs on average every 29.53 days. This means that there is usually one full moon in each calendar month. But the intervals are not always exactly the same. Therefore, it is rare for there to be two full moons in one calendar month (on the first and last day of the month).

When it’s closest to Earth…

Since the Moon does not orbit the Earth in a circle but in an elliptical motion, sometimes it is closest to the Earth and sometimes it is farthest from the Earth. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is full and closest to the Earth in its orbit. As a result, it appears larger and brighter than usual in the sky. Such a supermoon appears orange at sunrise and sunset due to the Earth’s atmosphere.

Optical illusion

Astronomers do not use the term “supermoon.” It’s a folk term for the largest full moon of the year.
