Canadian sentenced to life in prison for serial murder of Aboriginal women

and Canadian man raped and murdered four indigenous womendismembering their bodies and dumping them in trash bins, Convicted Wednesday to life imprisonment.

Jeremy Skibicki, 37, was convicted of first-degree murder last month in Winnipeg, Manitoba, after the defence failed to prove mental illness limited his ability to commit the crime.

Judge Glenn Joyal, in a written ruling that accused Skibicki of “inhumanity and barbarity,” sentenced her to four life sentences with a non-parole period of 25 years in a case seen by many as emblematic of the plight of Aboriginal women in Canada, who face excessive violence.

Speaking at the trial on Wednesday, he added that the verdict “unfortunately does not fully reflect the gravity of these crimes and their moral culpability,” according to local media reports.

Between March and May 2022, the serial killer attacked Native American women he met at homeless shelters.

He would take them to his apartment, sexually assault them, then strangle or drown them in his bathtub before performing other sexual acts on their bodies.

The remains of victims Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran are believed to be buried in a landfill north of the city and are being searched for. Parts of the remains of another victim, Rebecca Contois, were found in a dumpster and another landfill in Winnipeg.

The body of a fourth unidentified woman in her 20s, who Skibiki admitted was killed along with the others, remains missing. Local indigenous leaders named her “Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe,” or “buffalo woman.”

Harris’ daughter, Ellie, said it was “terrifying” to hear about her mother’s murder during the trial, according to local media reports.

At the time of his arrest in December 2022, then-Crown and Aboriginal Relations Minister Marc Miller acknowledged that the case was “a legacy of a devastating history that continues to have repercussions today.”

Indigenous women account for about one-fifth of all gender-related deaths in the countryeven though they only make up 5% of the female population.
