This week, the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa received a threatening email demanding that visitors submit to bag searches before entering the museum.
Darcy Ferron, vice-president of strategy and external affairs at the Canadian Museum of Nature, told Canadian television station Ottawa News that bag checks are standard procedure whenever there is a security risk at a museum.
“We take any threats seriously. We are centrally located and it’s a busy time for us,” he said.
Phelan said police were notified and searched the museum in Ottawa for any signs of danger, as well as the Natural Heritage Park in Gatineau, Quebec. But nothing was found.
Organizations across Canada have been the target of threatening messages in recent days, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Earlier this week, more than 100 Jewish organizations and houses of worship received bomb threats. Hospitals in OttawaOn Thursday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Shopping malls, ports, museums and galleries Canada also reported threats.
This isn’t the first time the museum has checked bags at the door. Earlier this year, climate protesters spray-painted a dinosaur fossil exhibit, forcing staff to temporarily check bags to prevent a repeat of the incident.

Phelan added that this situation is not common in Canada.
“In the U.S., they check bags every day. In Canada, we’re used to just walking in, so it’s really unfortunate, but we have to take it seriously,” he said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they will continue to work closely with police at home and abroad to advance their investigation into those responsible for online bomb threats across Canada this week.
“We take these threats very seriously and are grateful to all internal and external resources who assisted in this criminal case,” the RCMP said. “We recognize the fear and confusion these threats may have caused throughout communities and organizations, particularly the Jewish community, and we will continue to keep Canadians informed of developments as appropriate.”
