Cambodia’s Interior Ministry has ordered police to step up security around Phnom Penh, saying opposition groups are planning a mass protest in the capital on August 17, comparing it to the “color revolutions” of a decade ago.

The move comes after former Prime Minister Hun Sen warned against participating in protests “incited by Bangladesh” led by an overseas group, National Unity, which he said was seeking to overthrow his son’s government by accusing Cambodia of ceding territory to its neighbors.

Authorities said the “Roub Roum Dermbei Cheat” – meaning “Solidarity” or “Unity for the Nation” – operated online through Telegram channels and was made up of Cambodian expatriates, who staged protests in Japan, South Korea and Australia last weekend.
