Chea Chantha, an advocate of the Independent Democratic Association for the Informal Economy (IDEA), has been detained by police and faces three years in prison if found guilty of “engaging in misleading activities while performing public functions”.
IDEA works with informal workers, who also make up about 80 percent of Cambodia’s economy but are rarely counted in official statistics, to advocate for better living and working conditions, including improved government services.
Chea Chantha was arrested on July 16 in Bavet, near the Vietnamese border, while talking to workers about how to apply for the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), and was sentenced to pre-trial detention by the Svay Rieng Provincial Court on July 19.
