Complaints about the “mixed loading” policy, same sentence

Lack of health requirements contributes to the spread of skin diseases

Some laundromats use cheap powders to remove stains

The Arab News reporter visited some self-service laundromats in residential areas and found that some self-service laundromats lacked cleaning standards and hygiene requirements, and the hygiene supervision was weak. Some self-service laundromats even had stains on the wash basins and were substandard. In the same place, the sentence mentioned “mixing clothes”, which would lead to the possibility of spreading a variety of infectious diseases and other skin diseases.
Most of the employees or supervisors of these stores do not allow you to see the “backstage” or even just “take a look”, but let you stand at the door to see the simple and beautiful decoration of the store. The appearance reflects the good appearance of these stores away from the “dark side”.

For customers, they stress the importance of monitoring these stores, describing them as places where diseases can be spread, especially because some of them use cheap powders or chemical tools to remove stains, without completely removing traces of these materials, which makes it potentially dangerous, as well as the spread of skin diseases due to the spread of bacteria when mixing clothes together. They also warn that if children’s clothes are not washed adequately, residues of powders and chemical cleaning tools may remain.

There is a self-service laundry nearby
Ahmed Khamis, one of the dealers of a self-service laundromat, said: “I have been dealing with self-service laundromats for a long time, and sometimes I notice some stains on the clothes, as well as bad smells caused by clothes being mixed and spread in unclean places.” Youssef Taha said: “I am a single young man living in a shared house with a friend, and I do not have enough time to wash clothes, so I have to send my clothes to a nearby self-service laundromat. I call on the relevant authorities to initiate control of these shops and force them to comply with health conditions.”
He confirmed that his roommate does not deal with laundromats because he does not accept the idea of washing clothes outside and does not trust the cleanliness of these shops and the commitment of the management to clean conditions, given the lack of hygienic conditions in these shops, explaining that the violations that occur in this regard are related to cleaning methods that use inferior powders and dangerous chemicals, which can cause harm to workers and owners of clothes.

Cheap materials
“We used to wash our big sheets and bedsheets at laundromats but we stopped doing that long ago because we believe washing at home is cleaner and healthier and we make sure to use good cleaning materials, unlike laundromats where they mix clothes together and put a sign to distinguish its owner and they use cheap soap and the fabrics feel dry and smell bad,” said employee Hoda Abdullah.
She called on those who deal with these laundromats to be sure of the materials used, as they can cause skin diseases and allergies, without paying attention to the cleanliness of the place, explaining that people go outside to wash their clothes because they think that foreign clothes shops have good cleaning materials and special equipment, and the clothes they receive are clean and neat, and the individual, after receiving and paying the required amount, may find that there is a bad smell in them, that some items are discolored due to chlorine materials or that dark clothes are used to wash light-colored clothes, which makes him angry, and in the end the laundry owner benefits and receives his money, and the customer loses his clothes. Personally, I do not encourage washing outdoors, because today almost every home has an “automatic” washing machine and servants, and the owners buy the best cleaning materials. Therefore, I call on them to rely on themselves and not use the services of these laundromats unless necessary, because laundromats are beneficial for singles and travelers. ”

Disease transmission
Dermatologist consultant, Dr. Hanan Al-Jamal, said that some laundromats in residential areas may not care about cleanliness and health standards because they use a lot of water and soap for multiple washes, noting that washing always requires the renewal of the amount of water in each wash cycle, as well as a certain amount of detergent, keeping in mind this can lead to the risk of disease transmission. She called on the competent authorities to take this into account, because these laundromats use cheap materials that do not meet standard specifications for the sake of economy, and put all the clothes in a row without sorting them, which poses a possibility of spreading diseases. She added: From a scientific point of view, some bacteria will not die even if the water reaches boiling point. Such laundromats are definitely susceptible to the spread of diseases between clothes, especially underwear, because when clothes come into contact with each other, some STDs can be transmitted, so precise standards and strict washing procedures must be established.
She stressed that mixing clothes when washing may cause people to be allergic to substances mixed in the clothes, such as oil, chemicals, blood, etc., while using poor-quality detergents or not washing the chemicals from clothes well can increase the chances of developing allergies and other similar diseases.

3 types of sinks
For their part, owners and operators of small laundromats confirm that they comply with health conditions and reject accusations that they use cheap materials or mix clothes together, arguing that if this happens, it is unintentional. Abdullah Hassan mentioned that there are three types of laundromats in Doha:
The first is a small laundromat with no more than four staff members, specializing in washing and ironing, relying on small washing machines. This “maybe” means no respect for general hygiene. In addition to not relying on the actual process, it is widely used in residential areas, popular communities and crowded places.
As for the second type, “medium-sized”, which has up to ten workers and specializes in washing, ironing and steam cleaning, it is also located in popular neighborhoods and high-end places. It relies on large washing machines, but also does not use color sorting.
The latter are “large-scale self-service laundromats” that specialize in washing bedding, clothes, sheets, offices, hotels, hospitals, etc. These self-service laundromats provide a variety of services such as ironing, regular washing, dry cleaning, and steam washing, relying on a large number of professional workers to rely on accurate, scientific, and healthy methods to wash clothes.

Surface cleanliness
Recent studies have proven that clothes can be the cause of many diseases, including backaches, bacterial infections, constipation and headaches. The Arab Encyclopedia of Clothing Care Science explains that clothes can cause diseases due to their type or type of fabric. or due to improper care of them and the tools used for them, which is not without risks, for example, stating that the liquids used in dry cleaning contain chemicals that cause allergies and emphasizes that laundry is one of the most important ways of spreading diseases. Perchloroethylene is one of the materials used worldwide for clothing dyeing and dry cleaning operations, and its use is not banned internationally, but international organizations recommend that it should be used under certain controls and in accordance with published safety regulations. For this substance, as with any other chemical, it can cause health hazards if used improperly and without restrictions or controls. It is stated that it is not used in all laundromats, but in some laundromats that are authorized for dry cleaning operations, and in the Emirate of Dubai, there are many such laundromats that are licensed after verifying the equipment and equipment used, the percentage of pollutants and volatile fumes released, the ventilation system of the workplace, and the requirements of occupational safety and public safety.
