“I am very realistic about the current situation. First of all, people have no illusions about the warming of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. It is important that we declare that these relations must be restarted and Ukraine is determined to solve the emerging problems in our bilateral relations.”
She recalled a recent interview with Viktor Orban, in which Orban admitted that Russia had attacked Ukraine, but at the same time, the Hungarian prime minister pointed out that he was now only interested in “peace talks.”
At the same time, the official believes that Hungary is systematically using Ukraine as a factor to gain additional political benefits in Brussels.
Moreover, Stefanishna said Hungary does not have the tools to influence the end of the war, something Orban’s recent “peace trip” to Kiev, Moscow, Beijing and Washington confirmed.
“If Hungary had any tools to influence the end of the war, then at least upon arrival in Ukraine the Hungarian prime minister would have informed President Zelensky that he planned further meetings in China, Moscow and Washington. But this did not happen, and in principle, this is a fairly clear signal to the Ukrainian side that we cannot really count on Hungary to play a role in ending the war and restoring peace in Europe.”
