In the merger of Latvian Public Television and Latvian Radio, the online platform is expected to win a major victory, while the newsrooms of the radio and TV stations will remain editorially independent.
Latvian Unified Public Media will begin operations on January 1, 2025.
The chairman of the board of the Public Legal Electronic Media Supervision Committee (SEPLP), Jānis Siksnis, told LSM that the biggest changes expected from the merger will be mainly in the content available online, rather than in television and radio broadcasts.
Even now, a separate public portal LSM is still in operation, but TV and radio have also opened their own online channels. Siksnis noted that when it comes to digital formats, employees of LTV and Latvian Radio often do the same work, which is why it is important to combine these resources and infrastructure.
“Here we can talk about readers – readers who consume public media content on a computer or a mobile phone. (…) These digital formats develop, because they are the most consumed. I am absolutely sure that every citizen of Latvia will benefit from the creation of a strong ((digital content) company),” Siksnis said.
At the same time, the newsrooms of LTV and Latvian Radio will continue to operate separately in order to maintain editorial diversity. Likewise, LTV and Latvian Radio will continue to operate in different buildings.
Next year, the merged Latvian Public Media will also have the funds to raise salaries, but not for all employees, Siksnes said. According to him, last year, broadcasting funding for the next three years was finally increased, so no additional funding is needed.
