BALTIMORE (AP) —
Corbin Burnes had two hits in the seventh inning, Ramón Urías and Anthony Santander each homered, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the underpowered Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 on Tuesday night.
Baltimore took a 4-0 lead into the third inning and remained atop the AL East with a 6-6 record after the All-Star break.
Burns allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven. Although the Orioles added starting pitchers Zach Eflin and Trevor Rogers before the trade deadline, Burns (11-4, 2.47 ERA) remains the undisputed ace of the team.
“Very consistent. He’s hard to hit because the ball moves so fast, over 90 miles per hour, with a great curveball and changeup,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “That’s pretty much what he does every time for us. He’s a workhorse, he’s a No. 1 guy.”
The four-time All-Star and 2021 Cy Young Award winner has pitched at least six innings in 17 straight starts, allowed three runs or fewer in 21 of 22 games and is on pace to strike out at least 200 batters for a fourth straight season.
Over the past week, the Orioles have tried to upgrade their roster to make the playoffs, while the last-place Blue Jays have made trades with an eye toward the future. After releasing infielder Justin Turner and relief pitcher Yusei Kikuchi on Monday, Toronto traded relief pitcher Trevor Richards, infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa and outfielder Kevin Kiermaier just hours before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Starting pitcher Chris Bassitt (8-10) gave up five runs and nine hits in four innings, including a home run to Urías and a two-RBI single to Ryan O’Hearn.
Urías hit a single in the fourth inning, and Santander hit his 31st home run off Brendon Little in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.
Santander’s ball bounced off the top of the groundskeeper’s seating area and eluded right fielder Addison Barger’s clumsy interception attempt.
“There’s a weird wall there. We’ve seen it with other players, too,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “Maybe he kind of forgot where he was, and Santander liked to hit home runs in front of us.”
Santander has hit 19 home runs against Toronto in his career, the most against any team.
Toronto finished with five hits, four of which were singles.
Non-transactional behavior
Blue Jays: Drafted infielder Luis De Los Santos’ contract from Triple-A Buffalo, recalled right-hander Yariel Rodríguez from Buffalo, and sent right-hander Jake Bloss to Buffalo. Outfielder Joey Loperfido, acquired in the trade that sent Kikuchi to Houston, reported to the team and is in uniform.
Orioles: Recalled center fielder Blake Hunt from Triple-A Norfolk, selected infielder Terrin Vevra from Norfolk and designated right-hander Cole Irvin for assignment.

Toronto centre Alejandro Kirk left the game with an elbow injury.
Next step
Grayson Rodriguez (12-4, 3.82 ERA) will make his 20th start of the season in Wednesday’s series finale. Toronto manager John Schneider did not name the starter.
