The Ministry in charge of national solidarity, in partnership with the Educo consortium and SOS Children’s Villages, celebrated the Day of the African Child in Ouagadougou on June 22, 2024. This celebration puts children in the spotlight to make them aware of their rights. The ceremony was presided over by Idrissa Tou, the Regional Director of National Solidarity, and attended by Saïrbèter fa Somé, also known as Maurice, a representative of the Educo and SOS Children’s Villages consortiums.
Sketches and songs about children being exploited, abused and working in dangerous jobs. It is through this channel that children challenged the authorities and parents on the fight against child labour and the protection of their rights during the postponed celebrations of the Day of the African Child in Ouagadougou on 22 June 2024.
This issue has not fallen on deaf ears. In fact, in his speech, the Regional Director for National Unity, Idrissa Tou, recalled the need to strengthen the capacity of local actors, as children are increasingly vulnerable and seen as victims as the security crisis spreads across the country. He also cited as evidence the presence of more than 2 million internally displaced persons, a large proportion of whom are children.

In addition to the strengthening of the capacity of actors he discussed, the Regional Director called for the mobilization of substantial resources to combat child labour, in particular to make it possible for internally displaced children to return to school or learn a trade and receive psychological support.
The children, through their representative Chelia Kinda, asked their parents to respect their rights and fight against child labour.

After the presentation, the Regional Director, wearing his teacher’s hat, freely discussed with the children the concepts of fighting against child labour and protecting the rights of child labourers.

The postponed celebration of the Day of the African Child was made possible thanks to the collaboration with partners, in particular Educo and SOS Children’s Villages, two non-governmental organizations dedicated to children in Burkina Faso. In addition, their representative, Saïrbèter fa Somé (also known as Maurice), the National Director of the NGO SOS Children’s Villages, attended the ceremony. Mr. Somé welcomed the event and invited stakeholders to work together to ensure that children are not deprived of their rights, exploited or subjected to hazardous work.
