July 19, 2024 (Abu Dhabi) – In a major diplomatic move, Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Thursday held talks with United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed, marking the first dialogue between the two leaders since the outbreak of war in Sudan in mid-April 2023.
The discussions focused on bilateral relations, the situation in Sudan and potential ways to resolve the current crisis, the official UAE news agency WAM reported.
President bin Zayed reiterated “the UAE’s keen support for all solutions and initiatives aimed at halting escalation and ending the crisis in Sudan.” He stressed that Abu Dhabi is committed to any efforts that could end the conflict.
While the Sovereign Council did not issue an official statement on the call, the UAE’s proactive stance in seeking a peaceful solution is noteworthy, especially given Sudan’s previous accusations that the UAE has been supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The call marks a possible shift in relations between the two countries and could pave the way for future diplomatic efforts to resolve the Sudan crisis.
