The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has blamed “tax issues” for the scuppering of plans to appoint Bruno Labbadia as the new Super Eagles head coach, despite The German’s appointment was announced on Tuesday.
The former Stuttgart, Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen manager became the South African Football Association’s surprise choice after he failed in his bid to become president of the English and Welsh Football Association. Other leading candidatesformer Sweden coach Janne Anderson or two-time Africa Cup of Nations champion Herve Renard.
In a statement on social media, Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Musa Gusa said: “The Nigeria Football Federation and Mr Labadia have reached an agreement in principle prior to the announcement that Mr Labadia will be the head coach of the Super Eagles.
“We never discussed the details of tax and he himself had agreed to all the terms before the tax issue came up.
“We tried to be flexible in the negotiations but he insisted that the Nigeria Football Federation also pay the full amount of taxes. We simply could not do that.”
NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen will be in charge of the upcoming 2025 Cup of Nations qualifiers, which will begin at home against Benin on September 7 before travelling to Rwanda on September 10.
Eguavoun is no stranger to serving as temporary captain of the national team. In fact, this is his fourth time as captain of the Nigerian national team.
But following the departures of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, who led the team to the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year, and Finidi George, who completed just two games in a two-year contract, fans are left wondering when the Super Eagles will find stability again.
